it for about 3 years. Yesterday I got an email from BT saying that if I dont agree to paying them 拢1.50 a month they will disscontinue my email address! This is so typical of BT trying to make on every little thing. What can I do to stop them taking my email address apart from paying them the 拢1.50 a month which I refuse to pay on principl. I have spent thopusands with BT over the years.............I am very angry, it will be a right pain in the back side to email everyone with a new address please help...............

I'm afraid you don't have much to stand on here. You paid for a service for a long time, but now you don't. There's no reason for them to continue providing service to you when you're no longer a customer.





They have given you some grace period to continue using the account during your transition, and now they're letting you know that your time is up.





I hate to take the corporate side on this, but it's a pretty standard arrangement.





If you want free permanent email, check out Google, Yahoo, Hotmail... Then you pick one address once, and done.





I haven't used an email account from an ISP of mine in at least 7 years, for just that reason. I don't want to have to change email accounts and addresses every time I change ISPs.

Alternatively, if u wish to keep ur options open then opt for a workaround: go to that account via webmail, set up a filter that forward ALL incoming mail to the DELETE folder (or delete permanently an future incoming mail). This way, u could re-instate this email account one day should u change ur mind. I did somethng similar, a year later the junk mail have been reduced a substantial amount n the account became usable again.

Reply:If it is part of a dial up internet you no longer use it should be automatically closed down after a period of time of not being used.





You could contact BT and ask them to close it down but if you never use it then there should be no problem in leaving it collecting spam.

You can use many chat programs to view someone on cam. MSN, Yahoo messenger, AOL and lots of others.

You could go to http://uk.yahoo.com and just sign in as a new user to a free Yahoo account on the web. Then you can access your e-mails anywhere, on any computer.
Reply:make sure your bt yahoo email isnt remembered on your internet or it will carry over. go to the yahoo homepage and type in your email as normal once it isnt remembered and it should be fine (im gathering its not the same name you used).


bt can not carry your email id from btyahoo to plain yahoo without it being remembered on your pc as it could help with fraudulant email usage for example you use it then hubby goes onto normal yahoo.

Reply:You can access your BT Yahoo emails online, but if Outlook is set to delete downloaded emails from the server then obviously they will not appear online after you download them in Outlook. You should be able to change this setting in Outlook preferences to not delete downloaded emails from the server. They will then remain in your BT Yahoo email account online until you log in and delete them manually.

I would not recommend to keep it . i had a similar problem. bt keeps it only open for a certain amount of time ,and then ,one day it,is gone . along with all your contacts and no warning. retrieval is impossible. just open an independent e mail account with yahoo , and transfer all your contacts to the new account . send all your contacts the new address,and sleep a lot better for it.
Reply:Most Providers now delete you if you move away from that company, they have tightened up their systems. So get another E-mail provider ASAP when you decide to move providers. Yahoo or Google will give you a E-mail address and you can keep that as long as you wish.

I know 3 years is a long time, but do you not keep such emails in a special folder? I always set up a folder called Passwords into which I save all such emails. However, just contact BT they will ask for your name, present email address, and the answer to the question, such as mother's maiden name, that you always have to put down in such events and they will either give it to you or allocate another password.

Is it possible to use my BT email address through Outlook Express. I often need to do documents through Word?
Quite simple actually - go into Outlook Express, then click on Tools, then Accounts. Click on "Add" - it will then ask you for your name; this is the name that tags itself to your email address when you send email. Then it will ask for your email address from BT - type it in including the extension i.e. btinternet.com, btclick.com etc. Then you will be faced with a screen that asks for both your POP3 (Post Office Protocol) server name and SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) which is effectively the receiving and sending addresses respectively. Excluding quotes, type the following into the POP3 box "mail.btinternet.com" and the same into the SMTP box, then it should have automatically picked up your username from the first part of your email address, you then simply enter the password for that address.


Then click on "Additional Settings" - there should be a tick box saying "My server requires Authentication" - click on that and then click "OK" as it automatically configures it with the same username and password that you originally had. Thereafter, your email should be now working.





Once you have set this up correctly, you can both receive and send your BT mail through Outlook Express.

Reply:I'm not sure about setting up OE - as previous responder said, it depends on POP3 etc. However, using OE may not improve matters.


Using OE, you would still need to attach the Word documents to your email, so I'm not sure why you want to pursue this route. Also, using OE for email ties you to a specific computer, whereas using the web to access your email (as you seem to imply) means you can get at it anywhere - OK, a different computer will not give you access to the original word document.


Perhaps you need to rephrase the question. Maybe it's a problem more of attaching and downloading. How do you currently access/use email ?

First of all you will need to export a file from your old contacts. Save the file as a tab deliminated txt file.





You should be able to import this file into an email program or webmail account (Hotmail, Yahoo etc) which will now contain your email addresses.
